Shri Kamboi Tirth

Moolnayak: Shri Manmohan Parshwanath

Shri Kamboi Tirth stands in Kamboi village near Chanasma in Patan district. Its moolnayak, Shri Manmohan Parshwanath, is an idol whose form and craft tradition places in the time of King Samprati. The tirth is believed to be older than the 11th century, and Kamboi is named in a 17th-century list of tirth preserved at Patan.

The glass temple

Kamboi is best known for the inside of its temple. Ceilings, domes and pillars are covered in coloured glass and mirror mosaic, with painted panels and floral medallions, so that the whole mandap glitters in the lamplight.

Around the main shrine runs a row of deris with white marble arches, each housing an idol with its name inscribed below.

History

By tradition the tirth goes back more than a thousand years, and the style of the moolnayak is linked with the age of King Samprati. The temple has been renewed from time to time; its last jirnodhar was in Vikram Samvat 2003.

Fair and the panchtirth

Every year on Fagan Sud 2 a fair is held at the tirth, and thousands of pilgrims come for darshan.

Kamboi is part of a panchtirth with Gambhu, Rantej, Charup and Shankheshwar, and the tirth of Valam and Metrana are also within about an hour's drive.
